the show on july 10th at the universal ampitheatre was
sooooooooo good. before the show when everyone was
waiting in line to be let in to the ampitheatre area,
and everyone was sort of sitting and hanging out by
the gate in the middle of universal city, all us ani
fans got really weird looks from all the people who
were just passing by. a bunch of times, somebody
would walk by and ask who we were seeing ad we'd all
say ANI DIFRANCO!!! and they'd say, "who?"
so anyways, i went with my mom (she'd never seen ani
before live) and we got the tickets two days before
the concert. ani-whoo, maceo was so awesome. mostly
everyone in the ampitheatre was on their feet dancing
and boogeeing. and about halfway through the set, in
the middle of a song, maceo says something like:
"so i was walking down the street one day and i met
this girl who said she was having trouble making it in
show business and she sings and blah blah blah. and if
i could help her out, so i said, ok little girl."
and then ani walked out on the stage!!! and she did
this little dance with maceo and sang and they had
this funny little duel between her voice and his and
her voice and his horn. so that was really cool.
then after maceo we were all waiting for ani and there
were these "two little girls" sitting next to me and
we started talking and they asked me my name and i
said "johanna like the bob dylan song, visions of
johanna" and they jumped out of their chairs and said
they had just listened to that song before coming to
the concert. it was really cool.
but anyway, ani came on and the setlist went something
like this:
Virtue / Little Plastic Castle / Fuel / Two Little
Girls / You Had Time / Buildings And Bridges / Coming
Up / Letter To A John / My IQ / Adam And Eve / Up Up
Up Up Up Up / To The Teeth / Not A Pretty Girl / Shy /
Anticipate (with Greg Boyer) / The
Diner (with Greg Boyer) / Jukebox / Overlap
(with Maceo Parker)
they were all swesome, and during coming up she forgot
the words and said
"you know what's fucked up? no, ani, what's fucked up?
MA' BRAIN!!!?
and then she went off on this really cool thing about
having the people in soap operas who never finish
their drinks donate them to the people who really need
them. i was so happy when she did adam and eve and it
was so beautiful. before up up up up up up she told
us about how she got a videotape in the mail from a
guy who was doing all this cool choreography to some
of her songs and that he lived in LA and then this
cute little guy came out and did some really awesome
dance to up up up up up up.
the coolest moment for me of the concert was when she
did to the teeth. after almost every line everyone
would cheer, but after she said that line about when
"the men bring the guns home" no one cheered, but just
sort of thought about what she was saying and you
could jsut feel that everyone just realized the truth
in that line and had a new peerspective on the
subject. that was really cool.
during anticipate she was introduced greg boyer and he
didn't come out so she introduced him again and he
didn't come out and she said "well, someone's gonna
get a whoopin' from me later on tonite." :)
greg finally showed up and whispered in ani's ear and
she laughed then she walked over and whispered
something in julie's ear then jason's and then she
went to the microphone and said "oh you know i'm gonna
tell em"
turns out mr. greg boyer was watching lethal weapon 4
in the dressing room when she introduced him!!
so they did anticipate and the diner and this cool rap
thing and then ani did jukebox and they left. the
encore was a beautiful beautiful beautiful version of
overlap with maceo and people were holding up lighters
all through the ampitheatre and it was soooooooooooo
beautiful.
it was by far the best ani concert i've been to.
jo-bean
p.s. hi to those two lil grrls who listened to the bob
song before the concert!!!
