I was at the Wolf Trap show and am here to say that it really rocked (as ani said at the
show "Just because it's wood doesn't mean it can't ROCK!").
First off the opening band, Rebirth Brass Band, started the booty shakin' extravaganza with
some funked out New Orleans style grooves that really warmed the whole bunch of us sweaty freak up.
For this part I was on the lawn and it was jsut a basic field jam. They didn't play for to long
(appreciated because..well it's ani and not because they busted the beats).
Now Ani. For this part I moved up to the 5th row where the view and the vibe was just
fantastic. She opened it up "Little Plastic Castle" and it just got better and better from there
(see set list).
Early on these girls in the first few rows kept asking her if she had gotten her flowers to
which she initially answered with a bit of confusion and later in the show took time out to tell
them she would in fact get the flowers at some point, so not to worry. Also, Wolf Trap being an
outdoor venue, the setting sun really helped the atomosphere. Ani and outdoors is just rich of a
combination not to be had. She noted that the crowd of lawngoers matched the trees as the sun set
behind them, an observation appreciated by the crowd.
The night settling in, Ani set into some beautiful ballads, including her new "Come Away"
which is more than breathtaking in live performance. "Shameless" just rocked and sent the crowd
into a booty-shakin' fit.
For the encore she, The Rebirth Brass Band, and a surprise Sarah Lee appearance shook the
crown with a beat down, bongo infused, Ani rappin' verson of Prince's "When Doves Cry." The
sadness at it being her only encore was taken away by Ani breaking away from the mic and grabbing a
set of bongos to slap on.
All in all.....Ani, nothing more can be said.
