Peter's review Andy Smith's review

okay okay okay where do i start? i've seen ani either 7 or 8 times, and i have to say.. last night was one of the best! ani was in a fucking incredible mood, i can't even explain to you how happy she seemed.. the songs fucking rocked, the band fucking rocked, her stories fucking rocked (read on, please!!).. where do i start?

the opening band was good, and on the last song.. they had a guest drummer that fucking rocked.. guess who?! ANI!! she was SOOOOO good!! the guy was like "we jhave two guest musicians" and by that time everyone was screaming "ani!" and he's like "on drumns.. umm.. randy" lol and then "on bass.. uimmm.. another randy" and the bass player was jason, of course.

okay, here's the setlist as i rmeember it, not in order:

OKAY, now for the stories and stuff:

some ASSHOLES were throwing SHIT at ani in the beginning, and I HOPE you're on here so i can fucking YELL at you, 'cuz THAT IS WRONG! first it was a piece of paper, and jason grabbd it and threw it back. and then all of a sudden some big HARD object flew ont he stage and hit ani's guitar (i was 5 rows back or so and i thought it looked like sunglasses or goggles) and ani was like "don't hit the folk girl!" and then some chubby security guy with long black hair ran over and grabbed them before ani could chcuk them back.. i fucking HATE you WHOEVER YOU ARE. whoever it was continued to throw shit on the stage throughout the first few songs, until i think someone told them to stop (or they listened to poeple yelled "ASSHOLES" and stopped..) or they fucking got themselevs a brain and remmebered that ani could leave at any moment..

OKAY, lol, ani was telling thsi story about i guess some pornstar named "fanny" something..a nd she was like "jason, do you have anything to share about the movie we watched last night" and he was like "no" and so ani told us she'd tell us later.. and then when her solo two or three songs began, she started to play something and then stopped, and was like "oh yeah, i gotta finish my story about the clit movie" and so everyone laughed and so she was like "we popped it in last night" (and you could hear andy jason and julie laughing from the side of the stage) "and it came on and right on the sreen, it was a big screen tv, a huge clit.. like freeze frame.. y'know, fanny is like the receptionist at the dentist we all love.. the short skirts, etc.. so anyways.. it was like 'rewind!' and jason stood up.. and was like 'I KNOW WHAT THAT IS!'" and the whole audience laughed and she was like "his girlfriend must be proud.. hetero boy" and there was more but i'm too lazy to type it all out from memory..

at one point ani was saying something and was like "we should be like marilyn manson.,. what does he do? suck hsi bass players dick on stage" and so jason seemed like excited and then everyone was layhging and ani was like "oh no, he only does it ON STAGE not off.. it drives him right out of town" lol it was so funny

she went into some incredible banter about how religion is a cult, and it was soo true i was like clapping after everything she said..

after one of the first songs i guess she screwed up and started talking about how like in highschool you wake up in the monring and your hair is wrong and your clothes are wrong and you feel wrong but you still go to school and of course the right person is always there and is always right and you know they like to rub it in everone's faces.. and shit like that.. 'cuz i guess she screwed up one of the first songs..

at two ro three occasions a girl in the front was trying to talk to ani (different girls) and she honestly wanted to hear what they were saying, but she couldn't.. and i was impressed that she didn't get pissed or anything.. 'cuz i've seen it happen before..

at the beginning she was walking by the drums wiggling her (beautiful) ass trying to make andy laugh, and so she was like "shit, i forgot you people were here.. i hope my ass looked alright"

at the beginning of "shameless" (the last song before encores) andy was doing some rokcing drum solo and ani found a marshmallow on stage, and picked it up.. and andy was like "what the fuck is it with this town? don't you do any dope or anything, throw the good shit onstage!" and ani was like "throw any drugs up onstage" and nothing came.. it was hysterical..

she kept talking about the "huge clit" on and off..

she introduced julie as the "only one with class" and i remember that's how she introduced jason last year.. ;>

that's all i can remmeber.. it was a fucking incredible show.. yes, i took pictures, no i dind't tape it.. sorry.. i thought of ti at the last minute and by then it was too late.. but it was so good.. and yes, there were some epople there who obviously only had _little plastic castle_, and oddly enough, they were the only people who looked like they were having a miserable time.. me and my friend val and this boy w/ his girlfriend or friend next to me were dancing and everytihng, and so were the people behind us, but the girls in front of me were explaining to someone how thye only had lpc, and they looked like they wrere having such a miserable time..

.. i had the best time.. except for the people throwing shit, the fact that there wasn't an intemrission (the whole show i was like "shit, ani's not even halfway done yet" and then all of a sudden she was like "this will be our last song beofre we gotta say goodbye"), and these two FAT ASSHOLES sitting in our row (me, val, and the bou and the girl i thought were so cool were like cramped into two seats, fucking dancing and i kept wacking people with my arms but whatever) 'cuz there were these two FAT ASSHOLES sitting down in the row. they kept getting security top come, 'cuz i guess we were bothering them and they were taking up like 3 seats 'cuz they were SO FUCKING FAT but anyways i kept having to pull my ticket out to prove i belonged there..

umm, okay, so if you are A FAT ASSHOLE, please get BALCONY seats next time. there are plenty of kids that would have died for your seats, and would have enjoyed them.. and aren't FAT ASSHOLES..

i had such an incredible time, but right now i'm in that stage of depressiont hat happens every time the sday after an ani show.. but nayways.. ;>

"difranco lives up to her live reputation" by Andy Smith

ani difranco refers to herself onstage as "the folksinger." but difranco is to your average coffeehouse strummer what a mack truck is to a tricycle.

lately, difranco's been getting a lot of mainstream media attention for her business acumen - she's CEO of her own record company. bust as she pointed out in an open letter posted on the internet, she's a musician first, not a financier.

the sold-out crowd of rabid difranco fans at the providence performing arts center last night were hardly there because they admire difranco's royalty rate.

backed by drums, bass and keyboards, masterfully using tough, percussive phrases on her guitar, difranco was able to combine the intimacy of folk with elements of rock, jazz, funk and poetry, all infused with a gritty street passion.

she likes to talk almost as much as she likes to play, and somehow managed to segue from a bawdy discussion of sexual equipment to an indictment of capital punishment without undue strain.

early in her set, difranco ran through a serious of songs from her current album _little plastic castles_ [his mistake, not mine], including an appealing ska bounce of the title cut, the tender, bittersweet "as is," and "two little girls," a grim saga of love and drugs that had the ominous gallop of a country murder tale.

on "fuel," difranco used a rapid-fire half-spoken delivery, her voice rising to a yell, then repeated the final line ("there's a fire that's just waiting for fuel") in harmony with her band.

she conveyed a cornered defiance in "if he tries anything," and the bone-deep biterness of the exploited in "letter to a john."

this is the same person who went on a considerable silly (and unprintable) length with her band members when somoene threw a marshmallow on stage. [*lol*]

difranco let her band rock behind her on the full-bodied "anticipate," with a funky rhythm track and throaty organ part from her keyboard player.

she toyed with the dynamics, letting things cool off a bit before revving back up again.

difranco played solo from a searing look at capital punishment, "crime for crime"; in "independence day," difranco - who is continually addressing unworthy friends, lovers or both in her songs - managed to convey a range of emotion with just her voice and dramatic shifts in volume.

she had just started "shameless" with her band joined by kate fenner, part of the opening act with chris brown, when deadlines called me away. [as i said earlier, that's a mistake.. it wasn't kate fenner..]

difranco has long enjoyed a reputation as a powerful live act, which was partly - only partly - captured on her two-disc live set, _living in clip_.

seeing is believing.
