Music club Quattro is located in the urban center of Shibuya area in Tokyo.
It is a small club with a capacity of probably 500 or less. I was very
glad that I could stand very close to the stage and have an intimate
feeling with the singer, and I hope that, next time she comes back, she
will play at a small venue like that.
This is the set list of the concert (the order of the songs is not precise;
I do not have such a good memory that I can remember the exact order of the
songs in my excitement.) and some notes.
--- 1st Set ---
- GRAVEL (She was surprised and glad to have 40 or 50 of tulips thrown
onto the stage from the audience, and she showed us some ballet action
saying "I feel like a ballerina." She started with this tune with a nice
and sweet smile on her face.)
- FUEL (One of my favorite tracks from LPC, but it sounded better on CD)
- LETTER TO A JOHN (She played after a brief Buddism chant, saying she
liked the robes of Buddism monks but not their hair style)
- LITTLE PLASTIC CASTLE (Great even without brass)
- UNTOUCHABLE FACE (She asked the audience how to say "f**k you" and
tried to repeat the Japanese phrase ... in vain)
- TWO LITTLE GIRLS (Sounded just like the album track)
- WORTHY (The sound was tight and enthusiastic. Great !!!)
- ANTICIPATE (Bass and drums solo in the middle)
- SWAN DIVE (It took over a minute to tune the guitar, so she said "Thank
you for your patience. In New York something would be thrown at me."
After the struggle to get the right tuning, she was not able to get it to
the end.)
--- Intermission for about 20 minutes ---
--- 2nd Set ---
- NEW SONG (A song I had never heard of which had a line"five in the
morning" several times. If you know the title, please let me know.)
- NEW SONG (A rap-like tune I had never heard of)
- LOOM
- CRADLE AND ALL
- SHY (The sequence 3 - 5 was the greatest and most exciting part of the
show and my mind exploded)
- AS IS
- 32 FLAVORS (After the exciting and rocking 3 songs, she sang 6 & 7 very
tender and soft with great atmosphere. The audience was all silent and
concentrating to her voice.)
- SHAMELESS (Following the introduction of Jason and Andy and a bit of
their solo performance, she started the first verse of this great song with
no melody, and from the second she sang like the original. Great ending of
the show.)
--- Encore ---
- IN OR OUT (She tried to get feedback sound of her guitar but could not.
The sound was just perfect despite that)
- NOT SO SOFT (Ani with a drum between her legs and Andy with a large
drum (I don't know the right name, but the larget drum in the set, not the
bass drum) and the song sounded great with a kind of primitive power.)
Ani was wearing black no-sleeve shirt and blue jeans. She told us she did
not like the hair that day and called it "a bad-hair day," but it did not
look so bad to me.
I found, in general, the audience pretty normal or ordinary in their late
twenties or thirties, including me, and there seemed to be few
punk/f**ked-up guys.
