Ken's review
Once again, the show was lots of fun. This time I'll remember to
mention her opening act, Colleen (ack! I can't remember her last name.
I'll mention it next time I post...) [Colleen Coadic]. She really blew us all away (I say
that because the crowd went gaga) with her powerful voice and presence. I
bought one of her CDs after the show and was kind of disappointed at its
more muted, produced-with-a-band sound. I think I'd have preferred to
hear her as she was onstage -- by herself.
Ani's show was lots of fun. Especially during the first half of the show,
she bounced all over the stage, eventually shaking loose her "helmet
hair" (a description she used). (Again, I'll let someone else post a set
list if people want one.)
When she got to Swan Dive, weird things happened. I don't play guitar so
I can't say for sure what happened, but suddenly a bad note sounded and
she said "shit shit shit," and she stopped playing. She swapped guitars,
started playing again, but then the same thing happened. She tried to
play around it, but you could really see her getting angry and frustrated.
She finally just ended the song on an abrupt, stressed-out note. She
took a song or two to get over the incident. It wasn't a huge awful
blunder, and it just shone light on what a perfectionist she really is.
Other than that, everything went off well. :) This new poem, Fuel, is
really incredible the way she performs it. Although I was wondering, when
she got to the line about "Who'll be the next president, Tweedle Dee or
Tweedle Dum," what Chelsea Clinton must have been thinking. Yep, she was
in the crowd, mashed in among everyone else. Nice to see that she's able
to do normal-person stuff. I don't envy her life.
