Wendy's Review Wilson's Review

From the Virginia Pilot and Ledger Star, 23 aug 97,

Ani DiFranco backed by a drummer and bass player gave a satisfactory perfomance. Her fluctuating voice made the somewhat mundane music interesting. The audience seemed quite taken with her. Go figure.

Not a very nice review huh! She actually had a ok show in her own standards!  She did not seem chatty but her performance of songs was great! She did leave out the middle bit of both hands! It was great! She should have performed Dylan's set too!

That's my opinion. This was my first ani show and I must say it was a long awaited show. I was comparing the show to some of the bootlegs I have!

I took my 16 year old daughter to this show, our second Ani show in 97. We had forth row seats. She did what was a to be a "standard" set for this tour opening for Dylan. I don't have a set list but it was about the same as the first part of the 9-19-97 Central Park show.[before the acoustic solo group of songs] Ani seemed a little subdued, but the readings of her classic songs were right on. The highlight was a blistering Shameless. She also did some guitar work with psycedelic effects which was pretty cool. The set was too short and Ani didn't even try to really connect to the audience in the huge ampitheatre.

Many of the Dylan fans looked like Elvis fans from the 70's, big hair and sideburns. They were bewildered by the younger Ani audience's reaction to Ani. "Who is she?" the 50ish couple next to us asked. The gay couple on the other side of us were shocked that I knew every word to every Ani song! The Dylan set was aweful, he shouldn't have even opened for Ani, much less the reverse! We left before the glow from seeing Ani again could wear off.
