Ann Avouris' review Andrew's review
Most of the audience have already entered the venue when we arrive. A sign on the door says that ani has requested that smoking is banned inside. Security inside are making sure this is adhered to. The venue is larger than the bar in Manchester, and so there's probably about 2000 people present. Better acoustics, but it lacks the cosy atmosphere of the Hop & Grape.
Andy and Jason take their positions at 8pm, followed immediately by ani who starts with My IQ, this time word perfect. Untouchable Face, Worthy and Willing To Fight are next, with not much chat in between songs. These are followed by Gravel, Letter To A John and The Slant.
The first few notes of 32 Flavors are heard over the PA, then ani stops and again recounts the Glastonbury toilets story, with further embelishment, finishing with Andy looking into the bin. 32 Flavors starts and is then stopped as ani bursts into laughter, saying she's just thought about the line she's about to sing - "Squint your eyes and look closer" - to much audience approval.
Two Little Girls is next, then Napoleon and then disaster - I've lost the lead from my pencil (the rest of my notes were written in lipstick, which smudged to a virtually unreadable mess so the rest is from memory)
We get Anticipate with the music, but no lyrics of Get Up, Stand Up, the new song, Swan Dive (I'll try and get the lyrics for this), Dilate, Cradle & All, Shy and Shameless before ani leaves the stage. Of course the audience are not satisfied and demand an encore. We are duly obliged with In Or Out and then an audience participation version of When Doves Cry.
House lights - everyone files out. We go to the pub next door and then round the corner for a curry after closing time. Leaving the restaurant, a group of people look familiar - it's the band and crew, sans ani. We smile, thank them for the show and leave.
